Varrio ready for January research - Värriö valmiina tammikuun jatkotutkimuksiin
In January the research continues in Varrio at full power (there is the minimal occupation also over Christmas). In the photos you can see the main building (offices, accommodation, dining room, workshop room), the Smear measurement point is about one kilometre north. In the third photo research technician, Tapani Tuohimaa is ready for snowmobile drive. The photos are from Jan 15, 2006.
Tammikuussa tutkimus jatkuu täysillä Värriössä (myös Jouluna Värriössä on minimimiehitys paikalla). Kuvissa tutkimusaseman päärakennus (toimistot, majoitus, ruokailu- ja seminaaritilat), Smear - mittauspiste on kilometrin pohjoisempana. Christmas party 2004 - Pikkujoulu 2004
Before Christmas 2004 we had a Christmas party in Värriö station, the date was 17.12.2004. Before that, there was a normal check-up of measurements in Smear station in Kotovaara hill. Snow was coming down slowly.
After the check-up, we had a delicious Christmas party dinner at the main station.
Joulunalusaikaan 2004 meillä oli pikkujoulu Värriön tutkimusasemalla (päivämäärä 17.12.2004). Päivän normaaliehin rutiineihin kuului mittausten tarkistus ja päivittäiset huolto työt Kotovaaran Smear-asemalla. Lunta sateli hiljalleen, suurin hiutalein.
Illansuussa pidimme ikimuistoisan pikkujoulun tilaisuuden herkullisine ruokineen.

Lights in Varrio before Christmas - Joulun odotuksen valoja Värriössä
Hunting for the arctic lights happened in December 2006. The fifth photo is from Sotajoki river, south-west of Varrio nature conservation area while travelling back from Varrio.
Kaamosvalojen metsästys tapahtui joulukuussa 2006. Viides kuva on Värriön ulkopuolelta, Sotajoelta, paluumatkalla tutkimusasemalta.

Skiing to Kotovaara - Hiihtäen Kotovaaraan
Daily winter routines in Varrio Research Station is to ski to the SMEAR measurement station in Kotovaara, about one km north of the main building. Originally, at the beginning of the 1990s, the SMEAR station was established far enough from the main buildings so that temporarily from heating ovens or sauna ovens emission (small particles) are far enough and do not disturb the main measurements. SMEAR-towers were in winterly cover, but it was easy to climb up there and take some photos over the surroundings. The date for photos 11 Dec 2005.
Värriön päivän rutiineihin kuuluu käynti noin kilometrin päässä pohjoisempana, Kotovaaran laella olevalle SMEAR -asemalle. Mittausasema perustettiin 1990-luvun alussa riittävän kauaksi tutkimusaseman päärakennuksista, että esimerkki takasta tai saunan kiukaasta savupiippuun silloin tällöin pärskähtävät hiukkaset eivät häiritse päämittauksia. SMEAR päätorni oli huurteessa, mutta kyllä sinne torniin saattoi kiivetä ja kuvata ympäristöä. Kuvien päivämäärä 11.12.2005.

The Sun did not rise, but the Moon did - Aurinko ei noussut, kuu nousi
On 13 Dec 2005, I skied to the top of Varrio one fell. It happened to be the full moon day. It was exceptionally clear December weather, also a bit cold of course. The lights and colours in the south (the "sunlight" photo) were a bit different than in the north.
Joulukuun 13. vuonna 2005 oli Värriössä kirkas päivä, täydenkuun aikaan. Hiihdin keskipäivän aikaan Värriö ykkösen laelle kuvaamaan. Kirpsakka taisi olla pakkanenkin. Valot etelässä (aurinkovalon kuva) olivat hieman erilaiset kuin pohjoisessa.

December heavy snow in Varrio - Joulukuun tykkyä Värriössä
The start of heavy snow in the Arctic highland trees changes from year to year, depending on cold weathers, winds and moisture contents in the air. Here quite a lot of heavy snow was gathered in trees by 11 Dec 2008, around Varriotunturi fells.
Tykyn kertyminen arktisiin puihin vaihtelee vuodesta toiseen. Tässä tykkyä oli kertynyt 11.12.2008 jo melkoisesti Värriötuntureiden välisten notkelmien puihin.

Itsenäisyyspäivän kuvia, taannoin - Finland Independence Day memories, from older times
We drove with snow mobiles in 2008 Independence Day from Ainijärvi parking area to Varrio Research Station. Nuorttitunturi fell was to the left from the trail. The sun tried to rise, but on 6 December there was no success, quite far behind the Arctic Circle.
Ajoimme moottorikelkalla vuoden 2008 itsenäisyyspäivänä Ainijärven pysäköintipaikalta Värriön tutkimusasemalle. Nuorttitunturi jäi uran vasemmalle puolelle. Aurinko yritti nousta, mutta eipä se enää 6. joulukuuta tasolla onnistunut, näin kaukana napapiirin pohjoispuolella.

Lights of mid winter - Kaamoksen valoja
Lights of mid winter, above Arctic Circle, appear on some clear and cold days. Hunting of those lights with camera is challenging. There lights were above Nuorttitunturi fell, in Varrio Nature Conservation area, on 16 Dec 2004.
Napapiirin yläpuolella kaamoksen valot tulevat taivaalle näkyviin ennen joulua, tiettyinä pakkaspäivinä. Niiden valojen metsästys kameralla on yksi kiehtovimpia ulkoilun haasteita. Nämä valot olivat Nuorttitunturin päällä, Värriön luonnonpuistossa, 16.12.2004.

Kohti uutta vuotta - Towards New Year
Vuodenajan kuvia. Joulukuun lopun päivinä aurinkoa voi vain toivoa, vaikka päivä olisi kirkas. Ja toivo on turha. Tyypillistä on lumisen harmaa päivä, kuten tässä vuodelta 2008, Värriö kakkosen tyvellä.
Photos of the season. In the last days of December you can only hope for the sun, even if the weather would be clear. And the hope is in vain. Typically (like here in December 2008, at the foothill of Varrio II fell) the days are snowy and quite dim.
