Timberline Siberian spruces on Varrio fells - Kynttiläkuusia metsänrajalla

According to my memorable and classical biology teaching in Kemi lyceum I learned that the order of trees in arctic forest timberline is like this: when we move from the Gulf of Bothnia towards Lapland fells, we first bypass the Norway spruce (Picea abies), next Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and finally birch (Betula sp) timberline, before entering the open fells. Well, in Varrio fells it did not always go like this. Siberian spruces (Picea abies sp. obovata) had bypassed pines, for instance in the photos taken towards east from Varrio one fell. Towards east: that is where the Siberian spruces have originally spread to Finland. The photos are from first midday sun days, from 15 Jan 2005.

After heavy snow in Varrio 2 fell - Tykyn perässä Värriö 2 tunturissa

The period of January-February is the best time for photographing the heavy snow in Varrio fells. But you need the midday Sun for that. The Sun was there on 20 Jan 2007. I skied from Varrio I to Varrio II fell.

Tammi-helmikuun vaihe on tunturin tykyn kuvaamiselle antoisinta aikaa, kunhan keskipäivän aurinko vain paistaa. Tässä se paistoi 20.1.2007. Hiihdin tutkimusasemalta Värriö I ja Värriö II tunturiin.

Nuorttitunturi fell in January Sun - Nuorttitunturi tammikuun myötäauringossa -

Nuorttitunturi fell is situated in the northern part of Varrio Conservation area. When the weather is clear you can see the Nuortti sceneries (top is at 482 meters above sea level) well from Varrio one fell. On 19 Jan 2007, the weather was semi-cloudy and the midday sun gave her first lights to Nuortti fell.

January early sunlights - Tammikuun ensivaloja auringosta

The early January days in Varrio conditions are often cloudy, and the first sunrise of the year keeps waiting. In the year 2006 the midday Sun showed up on 15 Jan. I was on the top of Varrio one fell. The reindeers were also there, for lichens, apparently not for the first Sun.
