Lokakuu on Lapissa lumikuu - Snowy month instead of Muddy month
Perinteisesti Lapissa on satanut ensilumen lokakuussa; näinä ilmastonmuutoksen aikoina emme voi olla enää varma että ensilumi säilyy marraksen puolelle. Kuvassa ensilumeen on peittynyt (lokakuun puolivälissä 2004) horisontissa Värriön luonnonpuiston Nuorttitunturi. Etualan rakka on Kotovaaraa.
Traditionally the first snow in Finnish Lapland comes in October. In these times of climate change we cannot be sure that the first snow stays until November. The Finnish word "Lokakuu" means muddy month. In Lapland the description should mean snowy month. In the picture (from mid October 2004) the first snow has covered Varrio nature reserve Nuorttitunturi fell in the horizon and Kotovaara hill in front.

Ensi lumen aikaa Värriössä - Period of first snow in Varrio wildernesss
10.-11.10.2017 välisenä yönä Pohjois-Lapissa satoi ensi lumen, niin Värriön tutkimusasemallakin. Ensi lumen aika on kohdallaan, vaikka yleensähän ensi lumi ei jää pysyväksi. Vuonna 2007 ensi lunta alkoi sataa 9. lokakuuta, kuvassa tutkimusaseman saunajärvelle, Kuutsjärvelle.
The first snow in 2017 came to northern Lapland in the night between 10.-11.10, so it was snowing in Varrio nature reserve as well. The period of first snow is just now, even if the first snow usually melts away.
