Värriön luontopäiväkirja - Varrio nature diary

Tunturikoivu (Betula pubescens subsp. czerepanovii), hieskoivun alalaji on metsänrajan puu, joka kestää Pohjoismaiden puista parhaiten kylmää, (maa)lunta ja tykkyä. Tykyn siemen on huurre, jota tässä vuoden 2004 lokakuun puolivälin kuvassa on Värriötunturiin (Värriö ykköseen) jo syntymässä.


Mountain birch (Betula pubescens subsp. czerepanovii) is subspecies of Downy birch. It is the most durable tree species on arctic tree line in Finland and in neighboring countries. It endures best cold, snow on the ground and heavy snow on the branches. The seed for heavy snow is hoarfrost. Some hoarfrost is already seen in the photo from Varrio I fell, from mid October 2004.
