Värriön luontopäiväkirja - Varrio nature diary

Värriön tutkimusaseman pohjoispuolella, Kotovaaran (oikealla) ja Jyppyrävaaran välissä on syvähkö kuru nimeltään Pirunkuru. Sen pohjalla on myös lampi, Pirunkurunlampi. Mistähän nuo nimet aikoinaan tulivat, ja kuka nimet lieneekään antanut? Syyskuun loppupuolella (2004) näkymä on jo karun arktinen.


North of Varrio research station there is a small canyon between Kotovaara (to the right) and Jyppyravaara hills. The canyon is called Devil's canyon of Devil's gorge. At the bottom of the gorge there is a small lake called Devil's canyon lake. What might be the history of these names, and whoever gave the names in oldern times? In the latter half of September (here 2004) the scenery is already quite arctic.
