Luppojen porolaidun kuluu vain pariin metriin - Reindeers have eaten lichens in Scots pines

Porojen talvinen laidunnuspaine näkyy laajimmin poronjäkälien vähäisyytenä Lapin paliskunnissa. Luppoa, etenkin tummaluppoa sen sijaan riittää, ainakin porojen talvisen syömärajan yläpuolella. Raja näkyy (lumettomaan aikaan) noin kahden metrin korkeudessa.

Entisaikaan luppopuita kaadettiin talvisin poroille, luppokaskiksi. Valtion metsissäkin näin saattoi tehdä vuoteen 1932 asti. Värriön etäisessä kairassa luppokaskista ei jäänteitä ole. Kuvan (syyskuulta 2006) luppoinen ikimetsä kasvaa puiston pohjoisosassa.

The winter grazing pressure of reindeers is known as diminishing of normal reindeer lichens (Cladonia sp.) on the ground soil. Other lichens, hanging in trees, like Bryoria fuscescens can be abundant. This is the case above the winterly grazing limit of reindeers. In snowless time you can see the limit in the tree stems at about two meters.

In previous times trees with abundant Bryoria lichen, could be cut down for reindeers in winter time. This was possible in state forests until 1932. Varrio forests, however, are so remote wilderness area that you do not find signs of lichen tree cut downs. This old Scots pine stand with plenty of Bryoria lichen (photo from September 2006) grows in the northern part of Varrio nature reserve.
