Lapin tunturimaastosta, tunturien juurelta löytyy usein kuohuvia kaltioita, joista jokien ylälatvat saavat lähdevetensä. Eniten kuohuvia kaltioita lienee etsitty suurimman jokemme, eli Kemijoen latvoilta.

Nimi Kemi juontuu lapin sanasta Kemma eli Kemme (eteläisissä lapinmaissa – Ruotsissa – Kebne, vrt. Kebnekaise). Kemma on nuotiossa kuumennettava pata, eritoten kiehuva keittopata. Kemma-patoihin kuohuvia kaltioita on aikoinaan verrattu. Kuvan (syyskuulta 2006) kemma eli kemi on Nuorttitunturin juurella; siitä saa alkunsa Ylinuortti - joki.


In the Lapland highlands you may find living springs, where it looks like the cold water is boiling. The highland rivers start here. Living springs are found most in the upper parts of Kemijoki, the longest river in Finland.

The word Kemi comes from Lappish work kemma or kemme (also from kebne, refer to Swedish Lapland town name Kebnekaise). Kemma was an iron pot used in fires to boil water or making food. The boiling spring water was like boiling kemma water. The kemma (or kemi) in the photo (from early September 2006) is on the peatbog below Nuorttitunturi fell.
