Värriön luontopäiväkirja - Varrio nature diary

Lumen lähtö Värriön luonnonpuiston ylämailla vauhdittuu kahdella tapaa. Tunturien rakka alkaa paljastua, kun aurinko porottaa ja alkaa lämmittää verraten vähän lumen peittimiä tunturin rinteen rakkakiviä. Ne lämpenevät auringon paisteessa ja pälvet leviävät. Vasen kuva Kotovaarasta Sauoivalle.

Metsän sisällä pälvet syntyvät puiden juurille. Rungon lähettyvillä on muutenkin vähän lunta. Vesisateilla puusta valuva vesi kiihdyttää sulamista, ja auringonpaisteella vihreään latvukseen imeytyvää lämpöä johtuuu tavalla tai toisella maahan saakka puun juurelle. Lumesta paljastuneet puut yhteyttävät heti kun aurinko paistaa, juurten ja rungon väliset nestevirtaukset alkavat, ja sekin osa edesauttanee lumen sulamista puun juurelta, vaikka vaikutus lienee vähäinen. Snow starts to melt in the highlands of Varrio Nature Reserve from two ends. Up in the fells the open patches start to form around the stones. They absorb sunlight and spread the heat around. The patches start to grow. See the upper picture of Sauvoiva fell.

In the middle of the forest the snow melting starts around the tree (like Scots pine) stems. There is less snow around the stump in any case. Also the water drops to the stump from the canopy in the rainy spring days. The green canopy absorbs sunlight and in one way or another the absorbed heat is partly led to the nearby ground around the stump. In sunny and relatively warm spring days the Scots pine start also to assimilate early, the water start to flow between the stem and the stump. Even if minor, this effect is also boosting the snow melting around the stump.
