Värriön luontopäiväkirja - Varrio nature diary

Ampuhaukka (Falco columbarius) on Värriön luonnonpuiston vakituisia kesäpetolintuja. Se pesinee vuosittain puistossa. Pesimisen toteaa viimeistää, kun poikaset ovat lähteneet pesästä. Emojen kimittävä ääntely paljastaa pesueen.

Raippavaarassa, Värriön tukikohdan itäpuolella oli kaksi tällaista kimittävää emoa. Ne hyökkäilivät rohkeasti kulkijan yläpuolella. En kuitenkaan onnistunut löytämään poikasia.

Merlin (Falco columbarius) is one of the basic birds of prey in Varrio Nature Reserve. It is typically northern species and thrives in the coniferous forests of Varrio. It seems to prefer Scots pine dominated forests.

Merlin is nesting apparently every year in the reserve. The nesting is confirmed finally, if not earlier, by the nervous, somewhat monotonous calling voices of the parent birds. On Raippavaara hill two such Merlins were calling inside old Scots pine forest. I did not manage to find the chics, however.
