Värriön luontopäiväkirja - Varrio nature diary

Kiipesin Värriötunturiin katsomaan vuoden 2007 keskiyön aurinkoa. Ilma oli kuulas, tuulessa hienoinen pohjoisvire. Kotovaaran laella oleva SMEAR-mittaustornimme kylpi yön valossa. Yölauluaan lauloivat laulurastaat alarinteen kuusikossa ja punakylkirastaat ylempänä koivikossa.

Värriö ykkösen laella ainut ääni oli enää kapustarinnan vieno huuto. Kapustarintoja päivysti tunturinummella puolenkymmentä. Ne vyöryvät kulkijan edessä lyhyin lentopyrähdyksin, mutta eivät siirry hevillä toiselle laelle.

Heti ensimmäisen pyrähdyksessä huomasin, että joukosta erkani yksi ja lähti lentämään aivan eri suuntaan. Lähdin seuraamaan sitä, arvuuttelemalla mielessäni että joko muuan vuoden 2007 lajilistasta vielä puuttuva tunturin kahlaaja on saapunut. Minulta oli unohtunut kiikari tukikohtaan, mutta onneksi kamerassa on 48-kertainen zoom. Ja kuvana kehno, mutta riittävän kertova otos paljasti keräkurmitsan.

Myös keskiyön aurinko näkyi vielä juuri puolenyön jälkeen, mutta sitten taivas vetäytyi pohjoisesta pilveen.

On June 7 I walked to the top of Varrio fells to admire the midnight sun of 2007. As Varrio nature reserve is about 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, the midnight sun is visible well before June 23 (which is the true midsummer). The weather was clear, and there was mild breeze from the north.

While climbing the the slope I noticed that the northern sun is brightly illuminating the SMEAR climate tower in Kotovaara.

Golden plovers keep patrolling on the top of the fell, and their gentle calls were the only voices above the tree line; some night thrushes were singing below it. Golden plovers are rather tame and let you come pretty near before they fly some 20 meters to the next spot in the heather like vegetation of the fells.

Immediately when the Golden plovers jumped for the first time I noticed that there was one bird of another species among them. I had an immediate feeling of the species. My feeling was confirmed by the 48-times magnifying zoom of my camera. Even if the picture is rather poor, it isclear enough for identification. The bird was the first Dotterel of 2007.

Also the midnight sun was above the horizon. Soon after 24 hours northern clouds covered the sun.
