Värriön luontopäiväkirja - Varrio nature diary

Saukko voi Värriön luonnonpuistossa hyvin.

Vaikka saukko ei kuulukaan varsinaisiin outamaan lajeihin - sehän kalastaa ja vaeltelee pitkin puroja ja pikku jokia, kuten kuvan Ylinuorttia - se ylittää matkoillaan purolta toiselle myös talvisin hiihdettävän lumilinjan. Kesällä saukkoa ei juuri näe.

Vuosina 1968-2006 saukko ylitti pitkän lumilinjan yhteensä 49 kertaa, ei kuitenkaan joka vuosi. Saukon liikkeistä päätellen sen kanta näyttäisi olevan hienoisessa nousussa. Nousun suunnalla ei ole kuitenkaan (vielä) tilastotieteen antamaa varmuutta.

Mutta eipä tällä leikkisällä talvivaeltajalla Värriössä hätääkään ole.

Otter (lutra lutra) belongs to the regular winter fauna of Varrio Nature Reserve. It fishes and wanders at small creeks and rivers, like here in the river Ylinuortti. Otter is best observed in winter by its tracks. In summer it is quite rarely seen.

Although otter does not permanently stay in the old forests where the snow observation line is monitored weekly, otter tracks are counted now and then. Otter is then changing the fishing river.

During 1968-2006 otter tracks have been recorded in the long snowline altogether 49 times, not every year though. Based on the record the otter population might seem to be at a slight rising trend. The trend, however, is not statistically significant. But we can conclude that otter is well conserved in Varrio, as it is quite regularly seen even in the middle of the big forest.
