Värriön luontopäiväkirja - Varrio nature diary

Värriön tutkimusaseman tukikohdan luoteispuolella olevan Pirunkurun pohjalla virtaa etelästä pohjoiseen puro, joka laajenee kolmesti lammeksi; kuvassa niistä alimmainen. Myöhemmin puro kääntyy itään, yhtyy Kynsikurun takana Hirvasjokeen. Syvän kurun pohjalla olevat lammet ovat elokuussa yleensä autiot ja äänettömät. Tässä lammessa uiskenteli kuitenkinyksinäinen naarastelkkä.

Northwest of the Varrio base starts Devil's canyon. It has a small creek at its bottom. The creek widens into three small ponds; the lowest (northernmost) of then is in the photo. Later the creek turns into east, joins Hirvasriver in Kynsikuru valley. Then the waters flow into Russian territory. The ponds at the bottom of the deep gorge are quite silent adn deserted in August. A lonesome, female Goldeneye was swimming in the lower pond, however.
